Star UFC Fighter Reflects on His Early Days in the Ring
Champion of the lightweight division (up to 70 kg) in the UFC, Georgian fighter Ilia Topuria, sheds light on his introduction to the world of mixed martial arts.
"When I was 15, I had no clue about sports, let alone jiu-jitsu, mixed martial arts, or even the UFC," shared Topuria. "My father was the one who nudged me and my brother towards sports. I remember thinking, I don't even know if I like this. At some point, it felt like a pointless endeavor."
In Georgia, both Ilia and his brother were engrossed in the dreams of becoming Olympic champions through Greco-Roman wrestling. Yet, upon relocating to Spain, their ambitions encountered a roadblock. Greco-Roman wrestling was not as mainstream there.
A stroke of fate led them to Clement Club—a place that would mark the start of their journey in jiu-jitsu, boxing, and eventually, mixed martial arts, as Topuria recounted on the DeepCut with VicBlends podcast.
Bonds forged in the discipline and the unexpected direction their path took were crucial in shaping the athlete we see today.
